What is structured cabling, and why does it matter?
Structured cabling is a planned system where every network outlet runs back to a labelled patch panel in one rack, tested and certified to a standard. It matters because it turns a network fault from an afternoon of unplugging cables to see what goes dark into a five-minute check against a documented port schedule.
The most common call we get about this is not really about cabling. It is that the Wi-Fi does not work in the shop, or the yard office, or the far end of the building. People have usually bought a mesh extender or a stronger router first, and it has not helped, because the problem is what the signal has to travel through.
Signal does not go through metal cladding or concrete block in any useful quantity. The answer is a cable to an access point on the other side of the obstruction, which is less exciting than a new router and is the only thing that actually works.

Wi-Fi that survives the building
Access points positioned from a site survey, because a metal-clad shop, a concrete-block yard office and a two-storey house-turned-office all defeat a single router in different ways.
Coverage into the yard and shop
Outdoor-rated access points and the runs to reach them, so the crew can pull a drawing or close a job in the shop rather than only at the office desk.
Fibre where copper cannot reach
Runs between buildings, across a yard, or beyond the 100-metre copper limit — with the correct handling for outdoor and buried sections.
Camera and door-access cabling
Power-over-Ethernet runs for cameras, intercoms and access control, planned with the network rather than added later by a different trade drilling new holes.
Switching and power
Managed switches sized for the runs, PoE budget calculated for what will actually be plugged in, and UPS on the rack so a brief outage does not take the phones down.
Documentation on handover
A port schedule, a rack photograph, test certificates and a simple diagram. So the next person to work on it is not starting from scratch.

Walk the site
Week 1Where people actually work, where the cameras need to see, what the walls are made of, and where the incoming service enters. Cabling quoted from a floor plan alone is quoted wrong.

Worth spending on now
Pull spare runs. It is the cheapest decision in the project.
The labour is in getting to the location — the ladder, the ceiling tiles, the wall cavity, the fish tape. Once someone is there, the marginal cost of pulling three cables instead of one is small. Coming back in eighteen months to add a single run to the same spot costs a multiple of what the extra cables would have cost today.
So every design here includes spare capacity to the places that will plausibly need it: the wall where a camera will eventually go, the corner where the shop will get an access point, the second desk in an office that currently holds one. It is a small line on the quote and it is the item clients thank us for later.
Fit
Who this suits, and who it doesn't
This is a good fit if
- Wi-Fi drops out in part of the building and adding routers has not fixed it.
- You are moving premises, fitting out a new unit, or renovating an existing one.
- Cables run across floors and through doorways because there is no proper infrastructure.
- You are adding cameras, door access or a VoIP phone system that needs wired connections.
- Nobody can tell which cable goes where, and diagnosing a fault means unplugging things.
This isn't the right fit if
- You rent a small serviced office where the cabling belongs to the landlord.
- Everyone works from laptops on Wi-Fi in one small open room and it works fine.
- You need licensed alarm or fire-system installation. Different trade, and we would refer you.
- You are moving premises within six months. Wait and do it once in the new building.

Questions about network cabling
What is structured cabling?
A planned cabling system where every outlet runs back to a central patch panel in a rack, labelled and tested to a standard. It replaces cables run ad hoc between rooms, and it is what makes a fault a five-minute fix rather than an afternoon of guesswork.
Do we still need cabling if we use Wi-Fi?
Yes. Wi-Fi access points need wired connections to work properly, and so do cameras, door access, printers and desktops that matter. Good Wi-Fi is a consequence of good cabling, not an alternative to it.
Cat6 or Cat6A?
Cat6 is sufficient for most small offices and shops. Cat6A is worth the extra where runs are long, where you want headroom for 10-gigabit later, or where the environment is electrically noisy — a shop with welders and large motors, for example.
Why is our Wi-Fi bad in the shop?
Usually building materials. Metal cladding, concrete block and insulation with a foil backing all attenuate the signal severely, and a router in the office simply cannot reach through them. The fix is an access point in the shop with a cable to it, not a stronger router.
Can you run cabling to another building or across the yard?
Yes, with fibre for anything beyond the 100-metre copper limit or between separate structures. Runs between buildings also need correct grounding and protection, which is a real safety consideration rather than a formality.
How disruptive is an installation?
Less than expected. New cabling is normally installed alongside what is there, tested, and then cut over in a short window. Businesses rarely lose more than an hour of network, and it is scheduled when it suits your operation.
What does network cabling cost?
Quoted per project from a site walk, driven by run count, cable grade and how difficult the building is to work in. A drop ceiling is straightforward; a finished basement in a converted house is not. You get a fixed figure before work starts.

We run the cabling for cameras, intercoms and door access, and can install and configure the network side. For specialised security or alarm systems requiring licensed installation we work alongside a specialist rather than pretending otherwise.
